Mother’s Lesson on Race

We Americans often leave the impression that our elderly (parents, aunts, uncles, and others) have little to contribute. Often, we warehouse them under various guises, segregating them from the rest of us so we can reassure ourselves they are better off. Several years ago, my mother, then 76, (she lived to 103) reminded me how presumptuous this view is.
